Pick up your YEARBOOK on THURSDAY, May 17th
YEARBOOK

Yearbook distribution will be Thursday, May 17, in the cafeteria starting 7th hour for students with 7th hour open and continuing after school. Come join the excitement as the 2012 yearbook “Reaching Out” is released. There will be snacks and tables for students to sign yearbooks. If you cannot attend Thursday’s distribution event, yearbooks will also be distributed outside the gym area during all three lunches Friday, May 18. Students who don’t pick up their yearbook on one of these two days will have to wait until the last day of classes to get their yearbooks. Extra copies are available to purchase for $83.

AP Exams Have Started

Some students have found that one way to shave thousands off college costs is by taking AP exams, but the bottom line will depend on how well they score on these May exams.

Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses offered at high schools and students enrolled in them AP Calcwork as hard as college freshmen and sophomores. The exams are graded on a scale of "1 through 5", and students who earn a "3" or above on the exam may receive college credit at colleges.

West High School has always encouraged students to take Advanced Placement courses in order to better prepare them for college. The incentive to earn college credits for a fraction of the price through Advanced Placement courses also has been prompting more students to take them.

Advanced Placement courses typically include English, social studies, mathematics and science subjects. West High offers 17 AP courses and these courses have reading assignments more extensive than those in the regular high school courses, and to succeed students have to learn to read large amounts of material multiple times, just as they will have to do in college.

To earn college credit at a public college, a student must earn at least a "3" on the exam. The college credit requirements vary at private colleges, with some requiring students to earn a "4 or a 5" on the exam.

Government Launches College Cost Comparison

This year, 1.5 million people will enroll in a college or university. Trying to understand financial aid packages along with the costs and risks associated with paying for school is not easy. The federal government has launched a cost-comparison website (beta version) to help college-bound students and their families compare different colleges or universities. It then shows a side-by-side view of each school’s sticker price.
