Thank you to all who contributed to the 5th Annual Run for Relief by organizing, participating, or donating. We had our nicest weather and 90+ people ran or walked the course yesterday morning with the funds raised going to the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic. I do not have an exact total but we believe that over $4,500 was raised after expenses. That is also a record. I especially thank Susan Graves and the senior class for their efforts.
Also, yesterday City High was represented well by Melanie Holman (5th), Jill Stephenson (7th), Cassidy White (8th) and Emily Fagan (10th) as they were the top finishers of the Southeast team at the Senior Spotlight meet in Ames. Girls from all 4 classes (1A-4A) ran on each of the four teams: NW, SW, NE and SE. More than 60 of the states best seniors participated. Melanie finished just behind All-State performer Maddy Becker of CR Washington (NW) and our other girls were close behind. This bodes well as these same girls will be joined by Rebecca Rethwisch, Erin Danielson and Meg Richardson next weekend at Sioux Falls as they compete as a team in the Nike Team Regional Meet. The top two teams at the Regional will advance to the National Meet in Portland in December. We wish them the best of luck next week.
Scott Mittman was 4th overall in the Boys race at the Sr Spotlight meet. His family is proud :)

November 3, 2009: Aaron Johnson, Jesse Leyendecker, Matt Tvedte, Dan Minchk, Nick Beckman, City High Football: These five comprise the Little Hawk offensive line that has paved the way for the top-ranked offense in the MVC and a #1 ranking in class 4A.
Hello Little Hawk Families!
In honor of City High's 70th Anniversary, you will notice ceremonial banners that are flying in downtown Iowa City and over the Park Avenue Bridge. These stately banners proclaim our Little Hawk pride, and are available for purchase. Capture your school spirit by purchasing a banner for $150. Consider honoring a current student, a graduating senior, an alumni relative or a favorite teacher with one of these classic keepsakes. To purchase a banner, contact Terry Coleman in the main office (688-1040 or coleman.terry@iccsd.k12.ia.us). Click here to see the banner.

October 16, 2009. Iowa City High made a clean sweep winning both the men's and the women's varsity Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division cross country championships. In both case, it was their 15th division championship in cross country in the 18 years that the MVC has crowned division champions. On the men's side, that is not only the most division championships won by any school in cross country, but it is also the most won by any school in ANY sport. For women, it is the most championships won by any school in cross country and ties Jefferson softball for the most titles won by any school in any sport.
Bruce Wilson wins City High Teacher of the Year
Excellence in Education Award accepted on October 15, 2009
at City staff meeting
Fellow Science Teacher Kevin Koepnik commented,
“Passion. Commitment. Deep, expansive knowledge. Bruce Wilson thinks about chemistry teaching all the time. His innovative methods are far ahead of the chemistry teaching curve. To say he is the best chemistry teacher in Iowa is an understatement. He is the best. Anywhere.”
“Working with Bruce has been wonderfully challenging. He is tough to keep up with. Nobody works harder or longer to make certain that each student activity is perfect. If it can be better, it will be better. Now. It’s tough not to want to measure up to him. As a competitive person, I’ve spent the past 26 years competing with my closest friend. It’s made me a much better teacher.”
