Since 1948, Bates Field has been home not only to many of City High School’s outstanding athletics teams and countless thrilling
victories, but home as well to our marching band, school assemblies, and special events shared by the Iowa City community as a whole.

Today, our historic and beloved Bates Field is showing its age.
Named in 1969 for legendary City High football coach Frank Bates, who led the Little Hawks from 1947-1965, the sports complex facilities are in serious need of improvements that will enhance the fan experience and add to the safety and enjoyment of all City High event attendees.

Fortunately, the most urgent of these updates is well under way:
Thanks to generous funding from the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), new bleachers are being installed and will be finished in time for the fall 2010 football season.

The new bleacher system—consisting of safe, durable, and attractive Aluminum Tread—will expand seating capacity by 300, resulting in a total of 2,733 stadium seats, including 220 elevated seats in front of the Press Box and 28 ADA-compliant seats and accompanying seating at ground- level entry. By adding seats at both ends of the bleacher system, the renovation project offers more seating options and better viewing for all events, especially track and field.

But new bleachers are just the beginning. Their completion offers a one-time, not-to-be-missed opportunity to significantly upgrade adjacent Bates Field facilities in ways that will be appreciated by future generations of City High students, alumni, families, and friends.
