PC/Windows 7

Win 7 Quick Start Guide This brief guide explains a few basics about the Windows 7 operating system and setting up your new computer or newly re-prepped computer: logging in; changing your password; setting up Outlook; mapping a network drive; creating a shortcut to a user folder (on the desktop and/or taskbar); creating shortcuts to frequently used programs (on the desktop, taskbar, or start menu); adding printers; setting your default printer; setting your browser homepage; importing favorites.

Adding printers.  Generally, appropriate printers are added by a script, tied to a user's profile. Sometimes, the printer is not listed as an available printer.  This brief guide has instructions for how to add a printer (locate, download, install driver).

If you are new to PC/Windows, or new to Windows 7, or just want to learn a few more tips, consider Atomic Learning, an electronic help desk with thousands of short tutorial movies covering not only Windows 7, but many common software applications such as Word, Excel, FrontPage, MovieMaker, Photo Story, Powerpoint (from Microsoft); Acrobat, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop (from Adobe); netTrekker, Picasa, Geometer's Sketchpad, Inspiration/Kidspiration, and KidPix.  This database is provided by Iowa AEA Online. See your Teacher Librarian for the login/password.

Email

Outlook Web Access Quick Start Guide If you are outside the ICCSD network, you may access your email via the web using Outlook Web Access (OWA), a webmail service available through our email system.  This brief guide explains how to access and use Outlook Web Access.

Default Address Book Lookup List If your Address Book lookup is not defaulting to the list that you prefer (e.g., it defaults to location rather than Global Address List), this brief guide explains how to set the default to your preferred lookup.  It includes directions for Outlook 2010 and also the earlier Outlook 2007 and 2003.

PC/Windows XP

  • Setting Folder/Window Display Options in Windows XP  Why do I see so many open folders on my computer? How do I avoid that?   In Windows XP you can specify how your folders function and how content is displayed. You can tell Windows to open each folder in its own window or to have each folder you open appear in the same window, overwriting the previous window contents.

  • Customizing the Start Menu in Windows XP  Clicking Start displays a menu that lets you easily access the most useful items on your computer.  The list of programs on the Start menu is divided into two parts.  The programs displayed above the separator line are known as the Pinned Items List and the programs displayed below the line make up the Most Frequently Used Programs List.  You may customize both of these lists as you prefer.

Data Backup

  • General Backup Instructions It is the responsibility of each user to back up his/her own data; the tech staff is not responsible for doing these backups! We recommend that if you typically save on the server, you should back up on your computer; if you typically save on your computer, back up on the server.  And we recommend that you back up, additionally, on a cd and/or flash drive (removable media).

  • Backup with Roxio  Instructions for backing up data to a cd using the Roxio software on PCs.  (This is a long document. Look before printing!)

Destiny

  • Creating a Destiny Library Catalog Link or Shortcut to a specific school's catalog  If you would like to make a link on your library page that goes directly to your own library catalog (rather than the ICCSD Library splash page), follow these instructions.
