Role of the Teacher Librarian

The teacher librarian collaborates with other members of the learning community to facilitate and support the school curriculum.  The library program models and promotes literacy as the basis for students becoming independent, lifelong learners.

The teacher librarian has two areas of responsibility:

Learning and Teaching

  • Location, use, evaluation and communication of information

  • Help staff and students locate and use resources 

  • Use of technology

  • Study and appreciation of literature

  • Nurturing of readers 

  • Reader guidance and book selection

  • Critical reading, listening and viewing skills

  • Planning with teachers

  • Curriculum development

  • Professional development

Library Management

  • Collection development and maintenance 

  • Securing and organizing resources

  • Training and supervision of library staff, student aides and volunteers 

  • Maintaining and scheduling the facility 

  • Providing a positive climate 

  • Budgeting  

  • Securing funds for materials

  • Developing management systems, procedures and polices 

  • Technology planning 

  • Maintaining instructional equipment

  • Communicating with staff, administrators, parents
