Entrance Age

Kindergarden Enrollment Guidelines (Updated August 14, 2009)

Students must be 5 years of age by September 15th in order to enroll in kindergarden.
If a student has completed kindergarten in an accredited public or private school, in-state or out of state, he/she may be enrolled in first grade even if the child is not 6 by September 15.
If a student has not completed kindergarten (e.g. moved mid-year) and was not 5 years of age by September 15, he/she cannot enroll in kindergarten in the State of Iowa. This situation occurs when another state/country or accredited private school has a different age cut off date for kindergarten enrollment (such as 5 by November 1.)

There is an Iowa Attorney General’s Opinion stating that no one has discretion to overlook this law. There are no exceptions allowed including for children who moved in from another state where the child has been enrolled in kindergarten most of the year.
Per federal law, children of military families must be enrolled in the grade of the prior school regardless of age.

Steps for enrolling a child who is new to the district

Step 1

Identify the school your child will attend. This can be determined by contacting the Central Administrative office at 319-688-1000 and providing your residential address.

Step 2

Once the school is determined, go to the school for enrollment materials. Please take the following:

Birth certificate of child (required only for kindergarten and first grade students)
Child's immunization records
Child's academic records
Name and address of school child previously attended

School Attendance Areas

Students are encouraged to attend their assigned school. However, it is recognized that the needs of a given student may be better served in a school outside the student's local school attendance boundary. Refer to policy 501.4 regarding school attendance areas for further information. Contact the Central Administrative office at 319-688-1000 for a copy.
