Information from Johnson County Public Health Swine Flu The CDC has confirmed cases of swine flu in the U.S., including cases in California, Texas, Kansas, New York and Ohio. CDC continues work with health officials in Mexico. Disease is more severe in Mexico. What is swine flu? Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (e.g. children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry). How do you get swine flu? Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. What are the symptoms of swine flu? The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions. How can I protect myself against swine flu? Avoid contact with ill persons. When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or into your elbow (if you do not have a tissue). Throw used tissues in a trash can. After you cough or sneeze, wash your hands with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel. If you think you are ill with flu, avoid close contact with others as much as possible. Stay at home. Seek medical care if you are severely ill (such as having trouble breathing). Do not go to work, school, or travel while ill. If you have recently visited Mexico or areas in the U.S. where swine influenza cases have been confirmed and develop swine flu symptoms within seven to ten days after your return, it's important to contact your health care provider and be tested. Remind them to contact local public health officials.
