General Shakespeare Resources 

Consult the following sources for general information about Shakespeare, his era, his plays, and the Globe Theatre.

While you're in the West High Library, use the many books that are available.  So many of these books are so very fine!  These may be checked out after school and returned by 8 the next morning or you may photocopy the few pages you need. 

Next, check out these subscription databases for basic information about Shakespeare, Shakespearean plays, the Globe Theatre, etc.:

• Gale Collection  This reference database is a great resource for historical and literary information.  This resource is accessible from home, but a login/password is required. See page 40 of your planner!

• Britannica Online  Another subscription resource, this online encyclopedia has articles on many of the topics, as well as links to outside websites.  Also available from home with the login/password.

• World Book Online  Yet another of our subscription resources, this online encyclopedia has basic articles on some of the topics. Also available from home with the login/password.

Finally, the following are links to a few selected websites that offer information relevant to your research on Shakespeare and his era.

• Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet is a directory with many links to Shakespeare's works, life and times, theatre, criticism, and more.

• Shakespeare Online includes analysis, biography, theatre, plots. etc.

• Shakespeare’s Globe Research Database covers Shakespeare's Globe, as well as The New Globe (rebuilt).

• Encyclopedia Britannica's Guide to Shakespeare  is a special Britannica feature.

• Shakespeare Resource Center another collection of links to sites relating to Shakespeare.

• Shakespeare and Elizabethan Times provides links to some useful Shakespeare sites.

• Life in Elizabethan England 1558-1603  includes links to topics from daily life, such as food, courtship, work, religion, etc

• Folger Shakespeare Library is a good site for finding illustrations.

• Google Directory: Shakespeare has many links to Shakespeare-related sites.

• Theatre History on the Web  Divided into historical time frames, this site is maintained by the University of Washington.

• Arts Lynx Theatre History Resources: Shakespeare  Links for various sites, arranged by historical time frames.  This site is maintained by Artslynx International Theatre Resources.
