Welcome to Roosevelt!

Roosevelt Elementary School is on one of the highest points in west Iowa City at 611 Greenwood Drive. The school was named after Theodore Roosevelt. It serves kindergarten through sixth grade students. They then attend Northwest Junior High and West High School.

Roosevelt Elementary is a wonderful place to be! Our students reflect the diversity of the world. They come from all walks of life, background experiences, and social and ethnic cultures. Some of our families are in Iowa City for a variety of reasons. With our close location to the University of Iowa and access to affordable housing in our attendance area, families are here as research students, Fellows, visiting professors, or as new immigrants or citizens to the United States. Our staff is experienced with teaching children from around the world- some that may speak little or no English when they first arrive. Through their care and efforts students are soon using English and interacting with their peers.

Our students enjoy a varied curriculum with hands on math, science, and social studies and rich literacy experiences. We offer English as a Second Language classes, Resource Room support and Reading Recovery and Title I reading support. A school-wide behavior plan is known as Positive Behavior Supports. A full time guidance counselor, as well as a social worker one day a week, helps meets the emotional needs of children.

Students are grouped in single grade classrooms in kindergarten, first and second grades. Third and fourth graders as well as fifth and sixth graders are in multi-age classrooms. Student activities include a Student Council, Safety Patrol, Peer Assistance Team, building sing-alongs and performances, and Techspert volunteers.

We are lucky to have wonderful volunteers in our school. Parents, senior citizens, University of Iowa students, and mentors from Big Brothers/Big Sisters all spend time here to support student achievement and contribute to our positive learning environment.

Parent involvement is high at Roosevelt. We have an active Parent-Teacher Organization and excellent attendance at parent-teacher conferences and school events such as the Carnival and International Night. The PTO raises funds to support field trips, playground improvements, and classroom needs. A nature area, the Roosevelt Ravine, was created by parent volunteers, Project Green (a community based organization), and the Mayor’s Youth Program, and is maintained and enjoyed by our students and our neighbors.

The Roosevelt staff works hard to create and maintain a positive learning environment. They celebrate our students’ diversity while emphasizing respectful behavior and good work habits. Each day children’s academic and behavior needs are met as the staff strives to carry on the Iowa City Community School District’s tradition of excellence in education.
