A LOOK AT HOOVER SCHOOL FOR THE

2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Herbert Hoover Elementary School, located at 2200 East Court Street on a large expanse of land near City High School, has an enrollment of approximately 310 students. Students in the building are organized into two sections of kindergarten and three multiage units: a 1-2 primary unit; a 3-4 intermediate unit; and a 5-6 upper unit. In addition, there are three classes of students with special needs. Most Hoover students continue on to South East Junior High and City High School.

Academic skills, fine arts and physical skills, along with student respect and responsibility are among the emphases of the school. An additional emphasis includes development of the individual student as a person with successful learning traits, habits, and attitudes. The Hoover staff perseveres in their efforts to assist each child to set and move toward personal and group goals.

People at Hoover are committed to providing both challenge and support to students in learning endeavors. Opportunities for reaching potential are given within a framework of encouragement, differentiated instruction and varied experiences. The Hoover staff strives to promote "The Hoover Star" points of respect, responsibility, honesty, courage, and caring in helping students become good citizens within an educationally sound environment.

Among the activities Hoover students have opportunities to participate in are peer tutoring, Student Council, service learning projects, Drawing Club, Chess Club, field trips, guest residencies, Peer Assistance Teams (P.A.T.), Safety Patrol, and band and strings. Three classes of students with autism at Hoover offer unique opportunities for interaction, integration, and service. A before/after school world languages program, and before and after school child care (Hoover-on-Campus Care) are available to Hoover families. The up-to-date and fully accessible playground is enjoyed by the Hoover community.

A strength of Hoover School is the family behind every student. Parents and guardians hold high expectations for their children and appreciate the staff as an extension of the family. They support their children by attending school functions, volunteering their time and talents in many ways, and working through parent-teacher organizations. The staff works closely with families toward the goal of raising children who can solve problems both now and in their future settings.

Hoover School, a bi-level building on a hillside, was dedicated by the former President Herbert Hoover in August 1954. It has had a number of building additions and renovations since that time. A working partnership with the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library/Musem has developed and prospered over the years. This year Hoover School's theme is Together Toward Tomorrow.
