“Arts education is important as a means of giving our young people a sense of civilization and the multiple forms of literacy that will give them meaningful access to our culture.
It is essential for all students, not just the gifted and talented.
When taught well, the arts provide children with opportunities to develop creativity, to learn the tools of communication, and to create multiple solutions to problems.
The arts provide individuals a language that is universal, one that cuts across the disciplines and helps to bring more coherent meaning to our world.”
Betty Castor Florida Education Commissioner 1990

Visual Art Program Philosophy:
The Iowa City Art Teachers believe that each student is a creating, thinking and responsive being with something significant to contribute to society. Through a variety of art experiences, students build self-esteem, technical skills, perceptual skills and critical thinking skills by making art, studying art and appreciating art. Students will build a better understanding of themselves, history and other cultures. Art education provides students with the tools to communicate visually as well as to analyze and interpret the visual world. We believe that art is essential to each student's education. It confirms the individual's uniqueness, encourages creativity, promotes higher order thinking skills and builds a better understanding of our world.

Exibit Opportunities:
Students will have several opportunities each year to have their artwork displayed in the school halls and the school library. Each spring there is a districtwide student art exhibit held at Hancher and Iowa State Bank (downtown). As your child's artwork comes home be sure to have a special place to display it there too. They have worked hard and are proud of their accomplishments.
